The Nature of Tantra

We’ve all heard of Tantra, we all know it has something to do with sex. We are maybe intrigued, maybe wary, but likely confused about what on Earth it is, how you practice, and who it is for. If you know a little more about it, you may have heard that there is something called neo-tantra and something called Traditional or Classical Tantra and that the two don’t seem to be at all the same thing despite both being called by the same name.

If you are curious enough, we’re going to set aside some time to talk about it. We’ll have an opportunity to sit together in a (really) safe space where we can exchange ideas, have lots of possibilities for questions, and even do some (very non-sexual) practice. You will walk out with clarity about what Tantra is, what it isn’t, what the practice is, and what it can give you.

Hudson Valley! I'm going to be offering an introductory workshop. All are welcome!

Here is a start to our dialogue:

If Traditional Tantra has very little mention of sex, if the sexual aspect of Tantra is just an eensy smidge of the practice, why does everyone in the West think Tantra is sex yoga?

The first and easiest stab at an answer is that our poor attention spans and atrophied devotional capacity made sex the only palatable part of the practice. So, we did what white folks do, we took what we liked, stripped it of context and meaning, and sold it as an expensive masterclass.

The second stab is a bit more nuanced. If sex is the wave we ride into this incarnation, if it is our portal of entry, if it is intimately interlaced with our life-force, then distortions and traumas that affect the portal also affect the rest of our lives. They muddy our meditations, and shut down our hearts. Unless we untangle the root of sex, our lives may never bear the fruit they were designed to.

Tantra can offer us a way to connect more deeply with our essence, with who we really are, and with the unique energy that expresses through us. It uses sex as a portal to enter our unconscious depths, and to connect to the source of our energy, understand its blockages and distortions, and bring that current back to the light. It is the ever-so-sought after bridge between sex and spirit. The Nature of Tantra is a two-hour exploration of the conditionings that keep us from being free. @sunsethealingcollective
